NDP’s Lori Idlout urges election debate in Inuktitut
NUNAVUT – NDP candidate Lori Idlout challenged all Nunavut candidates to a debate in both English and Inuktitut.
Idlout urged the debates so Nunavummiut can have a chance to understand where the candidates stand on important issues facing the territory.
“Democracy is about hearing and debating ideas so people can make an informed decision,” said Idlout. “In addition to an English debate I believe it's important to debate in Inuktitut so more Nunavummiut can participate in this election.”
Idlout has been an advocate for Inuktitut to be included in Parliament. Idlout, through her advocacy, also secured a study to have Indigenous languages on the ballot for elections, a move the government agreed to.
“Speaking Inuktitut in Parliament is important to me, as it is a form of resistance," added Idlout. "I speak it to show the strength of Inuit. We are still here. We still speak Inuktitut. It's important that we debate, engage voters in Inuktitut so everyone has a chance to participate."
