NDP stands with survivors of residential schools

Residential schools and Indian day schools have impacted multiple generations of Indigenous peoples, causing trauma still felt today.

Lori Idlout, NDP Candidate for Nunavut, made the following statement.

"With the news of Mark Carney's father's history at an Indian day school, I know how painful it can be to see these stories.

After the discovery of remains at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, Canadians became more aware of the genocide that took place at these institutions - a truth that families and Survivors have known for decades. Canadians undertook efforts to understand our shared history through the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange shirt day.

Residential schools and Indian day schools have impacted multiple generations of Indigenous peoples, causing trauma still felt today. It's why New Democrats are strongly committed to supporting survivors and ensuring they have what they need to heal.

Mark Carney has committed the Liberals to cutting spending - something they've already done for unmarked grave searches and national advisory committees. Now isn't the time to go backwards on justice and truth for our communities. Mark Carney needs to be clear about his plan to invest in fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.

New Democrats are committed to fulfilling all of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and MMIWG Calls for Justice, so Indigenous peoples can have the healing and justice they deserve."
